Eat Pears to Support the Lungs During Wildfire Season

Pears are the #1 food to nourish and moisten the lungs. During wildfire season I’m eating more of them!

Where I live, in San Francisco, it seems like this smoky air just won’t go away. And if it does, it’s only temporary. Wildfires are a part of the new normal right now.  On top of the pandemic.

As I mentioned in my last blog post, in Chinese medicine terms, this smoke is a Warm Dryness Invading the Lungs. You might be experiencing a dry cough, wheezing, a scratchy throat, low energy, and/or red, dry eyes, among other things.

There is a lot we can do to help with herbal medicine, and I am now shipping herbs to people who can’t make it in to the office. But there are also things we can add into our daily diets to provide additional support.

The #1 food to nourish and moisten the Lungs is pears. And happily they are easy to find these days. Other foods to consider adding are apples, asparagus, radishes, turnips, sweet potatoes, kidney beans, mulberries, avocado, black sesame seeds, lettuce and beets.

Of course these are just a few, and are general recommendations that might not work for your specific body, but it’s a good place to start.
