Chinese Herbal Medicine Clinic: Take Charge of Your Health and Well-Being

Comments Off on Chinese Herbal Medicine Clinic: Take Charge of Your Health and Well-Being

Going back 5,000 years, Chinese Medicine, and Chinese Herbal Medicine in particular is the oldest and longest standing healthcare system in history. Chinese Herbal Medicine has evolved throughout the centuries as clinical and environmental conditions changed and research uncovered new and better treatments. It began in China and quickly grew momentum in other East Asian countries. Historically it was highly localized, based on the flora and fauna of specific areas. More recently, it has started to gain popularity in the West due to its gentle effectiveness and lack of side-effects.

Chinese Herbal Medicine is a holistic healthcare approach that can treat a wide range of conditions. It’s complemented by exercise in breathing and movement, acupuncture, and dietary therapy. It is rooted in the concept of Yin and Yang, the theory of balance and harmony that underlies all of Chinese Medicine. All illness or disharmony can be thought of as an imbalance of Yin and Yang. This could mean a deficiency or excess of one or the other, which could manifest as a specific disease or pain pattern. Chinese Herbal Medicine works to gently correct these underlying disharmonies to help restore balance.

There are over 450 medicinal substances currently used in Chinese Herbal Medicine. Most are of plant origin, but some are animal-based or made from minerals. Most ingredients are either leaves, fruits, seeds, or roots. For my fellow vegetarians, a formula can always be modified to substitute out any animal-based ingredients.

Herbal Treatment vs. Modern PharmacologyChinese herbal medicine

When you consider whether to investigate herbal medicine treatments, you will most probably wonder whether modern pharmacology isn’t better for you. Western medicine can often stop symptoms more quickly, after all. Here are some major reasons why I think you should give herbal medicine a try:

  • Plant materials are more complex and more balanced than the medicine based on isolated active ingredients used in modern Western pharmacology. It is, therefore, less likely to have any side-effects.
  • Herbs are usually prescribed in combination. The different components of the various herbs balance each other out – there is a mutual synergy between herbs that increases efficacy and enhances the safety of the medicine.
  • Herbal medicine corrects the underlying internal imbalance (or the root cause), not just the symptoms, encouraging the body’s self-healing process. Modern pharmacology primarily focuses on masking symptoms, which ignores the message being sent by the body, and doesn’t address the underlying issue. This can mean that the symptoms recur when the drug is stopped, or the body manifests the imbalance in a different location or way.
  • Conditions That Can Be Treated by Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine strengthens and enhances normal body functions; it boosts the immune system and strives to find a general sense of balance and well-being. Conditions which are commonly treated by herbal medicine include:

If you’re unsure whether Chinese Herbal Medicine is right for you, here are a few answers to questions or concerns you may have:

  • Herbal medicine is suitable for persons of virtually any age or constitution. I take into account your body constitution, previous and current illnesses, as well as other medication you use. Dosages for children and pregnant women are adjusted according to what’s best for them.
  • Treatment duration depends on the severity of your condition, how long you have suffered from the condition, and the state of your health in general.
  • Each prescription is highly individualized to suit the condition and constitution of each patient. As your condition changes and improves, the formula is adjusted.
  • Medicine can come in various forms. Traditionally we used dried herbs, boiled to make herbal tea. More modern formats include pills and capsules, freeze dried powders for teas, and syrups, especially for children. I primarily use extracted powders from Evergreen Herbs Co. These are extremely high quality and thoroughly tested for quality and contamination from pesticides and heavy metals.
  • Herbal medicine may taste unusual or bitter the first time you take it, but you’ll get used to the taste quickly.
  • Chinese Herbal Medicine is extremely safe and adverse reactions are extremely rare. Just make sure you visit a properly trained and registered Chinese medicine practitioner – we place great emphasis on the protection of our patients.
  • We don’t use any endangered species in our herbal treatments. Substances that became endangered were replaced by other elements with similar properties and actions.
