Season’s Greetings!

Walking among thousand-year old redwood trees is one of my favorite Yin building activities.

Brrr! It’s cold these days! It’s about as cold as it ever gets around here in San Francisco. I recently learned this is called “California Cold”: It feels cold to all of us that aren’t used to it, but for non-Californians, it’s laughable.

Well regardless of how you feel about the cold, winter is upon us in the Bay Area. In Chinese medicine, winter is the most Yin time. Plants go dormant, and animals slow down or hibernate completely. This is the time for more rest, more relaxation, and more nourishment. For us humans it can be easy to forget these cycles of nature, especially with all the excitement (and perhaps stress) of the holiday season. Yet it can be especially important for our health to tune into this.

So this holiday season, in between all the festivities, try to find some of this more Yin energy. Sleep in! Take a nap! Take a bath! Turn your phone off! Do more self-care! Relax more!

Wishing you a happy and safe holiday season!
